Clowns on the run, steampunk drama and WTF
We’re proud to announce our eighteenth season of timely and invigorating stories by women artists. Tickets available now!
Aliens with Extraordinary Skills by Saviana Stanescu (Ensemble Studio Theatre, Women’s Project), directed by Melissa Simmons (Providence Academy, Emmrich Productions). Moldovan immigrant Nadia has a work visa identifying her as an “alien with extraordinary skills” - she is a clown. When she receives a deportation order, she goes into hiding in New York City. The New York Times called the play “an enchanting piece of theatre.” September 9-24, 2017 at Gremlin Theatre in St. Paul.
24:00:00 Xtreme Theatre Smackdown, January 13, 2017 at SteppingStone Theatre in St. Paul. Dozens of theatre artists race the clock to create six brand-new short plays in a single day.
A Wives’ Tale by Christina Ham (Nina Simone: Four Women) directed by Kate Powers (Redeeming Time Project). A steampunk drama about women struggling to hold society together in a world after nuclear war. Of the script, first drafted more than ten years ago, Christina Ham notes, “This play is as timely as it ever has been. It provides an opportunity to look at the depths of where we’ve come from and to see where we’re going.” Powers adds, “Christina’s writing is fierce and fearless; I am thrilled and honored to investigate A Wives’ Tale in the rehearsal room with a group of smart, curious actors.” March 24-April 8, 2018 at Gremlin Theatre in St. Paul.
And we’re excited to partner with Raw Sugar Theatre on The WTF (Women/Trans/Femme) Playwriting Workshop for new comedic scripts by women and trans writers from the Twin Cities area. Raw Sugar and Theatre Unbound put out a call for proposals earlier this year and will connect the selected writers with directors and cast members for a series of script workshops in the coming year. Full productions of the new scripts will be presented in spring 2018 at a venue to be announced.
